When we were thinking about purchasing this house all I could think about was painting the oak fireplace mantel white. It's a beautiful oak but at the same time it's very blah and doesn't really fit the rest of the house. I love the traditional look but I feel this look screams 90's! It just doesn't have that luxurious feel I think a fireplace should have. So here I am...owner of this house and this fireplace and I am itching to get my paws on it. Problem is hubby is against it. He didn't say "I can't" but I think he is just terrified of me F'ing it up and having to pay someone to fix it, especially since I've never done anything like this. What do you think? If you or anyone you know has experience with this please chime in. I welcome your 2 cents!! Here is my inspiration...

Yes yes yes a thousand times yes!!! Paint it. The oak look is outdated & you won't regret painting over it! I think it will make your space look really great! :) I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it.
Yes love the white. When you do the side by side comparison the white looks much fresher.
Thank you, ladies. My painter said if I don't F it up too badly he will fix it for me. ha ha ha
paint it! you will love it!!! :)
Do it! You can always re-paint it or sand it down and refinish it if you miss the wood.
I'm thinking of doing the same, so the answer is yes, definitely paint!.
Thanks for stopping by homehappyhome! After reading your comment I had to stop by and check out your fireplace. You know I'm going to tell you to paint it! I can understand your husband being scared to paint the wood, but it is soooo worth it!
Glad to hear you are painting your room in barnwood. We used the same color in our old home as well as our new home and I love it! It is such a nice neutral.
Good luck with everything! Let me know when you get that fireplace painted, can't wait to see some pics!

Great to see a fellow blogger in STL!!! I vote to PAINT IT! The stained oak gives it a very dated look but the white paint is a much fresher look.
